Heroes In Transition – Help Veterans Heal Through Equine Therapy

Heroes In Transition (HIT) offers life-changing equine therapy programs for veterans, active service members, and their families.
Through its Families In Transition (FIT) program, military families facing deployment connect with horses in powerful ways—grooming, riding, and bonding together during evening sessions that include shared meals and guided activities. It’s a space for healing, communication, and reconnection during some of life’s hardest moments.
For veterans dealing with trauma or PTSD, Equine Warrior Weekends provide immersive retreats on Cape Cod. Participants spend days forming deep, healing connections with horses—no assignments, just natural bonds—guided by a retired VA psychiatrist, chaplain, and equine specialists.
These programs are more than therapy—they’re transformation. Your support helps HIT continue this important work and extend its reach to more heroes who need it.
Story
Why Mary Lou & Gary Palumbo Chose to Sponsor Heroes in Transition
Gary and I were very excited when we first heard about the Think Local campaign. It’s such a powerful way to give back and support meaningful causes in the communities we serve. We knew right away that our campaign would be for Heroes In Transition (HIT).
HIT is an incredible organization that supports veterans as they transition into civilian life. They provide 15 life-changing programs—including the equestrian program, which our Think Local campaign will directly support if we meet our goal.
HIT was founded in 2009 by Cynthia and her late husband Kenneth Jones, in memory of their son, Captain Eric Jones, who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Afghanistan. Gary and I first heard their story during my time as Executive Director of the Mashpee Chamber. I’ll never forget how the community came together to rally behind their vision. It was an honor to play a role in HIT’s early days through the Chamber, to watch it grow, and now to support its future through Think Local.
But this work doesn’t happen without funding. HIT needs our help to continue making an impact for veterans and their families—and this is our chance to make a real difference
